Shooting Ethos

Our shoot is a collaboration -- two artists coming together to create something amazing.  We both want to create great images we can use in our respective portfolios.  We want it to be relaxed, fun, and carefree.  Communication is key - if a look isn't working for us, we'll just move onto the next one.  No matter what, our goal is to create something that we both love.

Before the Shoot

  • Background:  Check out the style of shooting I typically do.  You can find it on my Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/feminineportraiture/ or on the website here.  Watch my Reels on IG to get a flavor of what the shoots are like.
  • Inspo Pics:  Send me some mood images for inspo.  We won't try to copy these images, but this will give me an idea of what style and mood you're thinking of.  I also have some concepts that I've been wanting to do here.
  • Outfits:  Also send some pics or videos of the outfits you plan to wear.  Some of my most productive collabs are ones where we've exchanged inspo and outfit pics prior to the shoot, and I bring along printed "menus" of our inspo and outfits that we can choose from on the fly!
  • Contact Info:  Make sure I have your contact info - IG or text or email, just so we can get a hold of each other in case anything comes up.

During the Shoot

  • Shooting is a partnership, a collaboration -  we'll make it fun and relaxed.
  • Typically we shoot for around 2 hours, with another half hour for printing and wrap-up.
  • I bring a bluetooth speaker so you can play your favorite music while shooting.
  • I don't pose my models -- it's much more important to capture a mood, feeling, a glance, than it is to capture a rigid pose.   See my posing page for ideas where we can start.
  • I bring a portable change tent, so you can change outfits super-easy and as often as you'd like.
  • Bring lots of outfits.  We can easily do 4 or more in a 2-hour photoshoot.
  • In two hours we'll usually get around 500 or more images.
  • At the start of the photoshoot I'll give you an iPad to carry with you, it'll have all the images we take, as we take them, so you can instantly see what we're capturing.
  • At the end of the photoshoot we'll print out 5 of your favorite images from the iPad, you can take those prints home with you.
  • You're more than welcome to bring  a companion along to on the shoot -- they can hold the reflector!  As long as I can focus on the photography, and you can focus on the modelling, it's completely fine.  I want you to be comfortable, and at your best.

After the Shoot

  • I'll send you the entire set of images we captured, unretouched, for your selections.  Usually within a day or two of the shoot.
  • Send me your email if you haven't already so I can send you the images.
  • We'll pick around 10-15 images out of the set for the full retouch.  If you can pick the top 10-15 that's great, if you want to pick more that's cool too, I'll chose the top 10-15 of your favorites.
  • I can usually get the full-resolution high quality retouched images back to you within two weeks of when you send me your selects.

FAQ

  • How do I edit my photos?    I edit in Adobe Photoshop CC.  The full edit workflow I do takes around 30 minutes per image - I use photoshop, and my workflow is raw conversion >  light frequency separation > liquify > local healing > eyes > local dodge and burn > general dodge and burn > subject separation with light, color, saturation > overall colors ... as needed.  If you have any specific technical requests or preferences, feel free to let me know.  You can see some speed-edits of my workflow on my YouTube page.
  • Do I require a model release?  I generally don't require a model release when shooting for trade / test shoot / collaboration.  However, it's always a good idea to have a completed model release before any shoot, if you don't have your own, there's a simple one on this site.
  • Who am I?  I'm a male photographer,  raised in Ontario, Canada, and have always had a love of photography.  My main career is as a scientist: working with biotechnology and DNA -- but my artistic outlet is creating beautiful portraits through photography.  When not out shooting or working, my wife Melanie and I love to travel and explore new places.  Living in Fairfield, California, we have easy access to San Francisco, the Central Valley, and the Sierras.
  • Why does your photo logo have an atom on it?  The atom symbolizes my background in science, and ties into my somewhat scientific and detail-oriented approach to feminine portraiture.  It also ties back to my father, who worked in Canada's nuclear industry for decades.
  • Do you have any references?  Sure!  You can check out my Reviews page here, or on my IG Story Highlights, and definitely feel free to reach out to any of the models I've worked with in the past.
